Here we go starting another modelling season. Most of you took the summer months off from modelling, activity at the club was slow, but for me it just took a back seat to mowing the lawn, holidays and other personal activities. I attended the joint 6th Division-7th Division Meet in Cranbrook along with about 6 from Calgary, no other CMT members. Too bad! A full report appears in the current issue of the 6th Division HIGHBALL”. The 16th Annual Big Valley Free-mo weekend occurred Aug 15-18, 2019 where THE Big Valley hockey rink was filled with a modular layout! Event was open to all Free-mo module owners across North America. I assume the 17th Annual event will occur next year.

AT THE CLUB

The summer months are always slow but behind the scenes. More new members have recently been accepted. Garth with help from others have launched into a massive bridge building program and many kits are being built accordingly. Garth assures me and President Boudreau that the loop around the wall will be operational for our November Open House.

CMRS MODELING EVENT

25th Anniversary Diorama Challenge In honour of the CMRS 25th anniversary, we are going to have a diorama challenge for the Fall mini-meet. The challenge is to build something, anything, within a square that is 25 cm by 25 cm (9 7/8 inches square but I am sure we won't notice if it is 10” square!). Any scale, any subject matter, the only restriction is that it has to fit into that 25 cm square, it can go up as high as you want. There will be a popular vote and the winner will receive a $25 gift certificate at a hobby shop of their choice. Start thinking of what you might build, if you build in Z scale you could build a whole layout, in G scale maybe only one figure would fit!

And now for some other misc. news:

1. Good news for us scratchbuilders....NWSL (NORTHWEST SHORT LINES) under new management apparently purchased by an employee. The company will now operate near ????

2. I’ve taken recently to wasting a lot of time on the computer, particularily looking at different webcam sites. A good one (close to Calgary) is Revelstoke. Type in (REVELSTOKE RAILCAM). There is a sidebar with comments and further down is a link to other Railcams. I choose the left of 3 windows with photos titled “Revelstoke, BC Canada – Virtual Railfan LIVE” then when the display comes up make sure you are in press (if needed) the symbol to the right of the speaker symbol to be in the LIVE mode otherwise a 40 second delay occurs. There are also 2 cameras to choose from.

3. A Railroad type movie called UNSTOPPABLE is a movie about a runaway train. I found behind the scenes available at: (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXePDmd-LUo)

Nelson, British Columbia — September 18-23, 2020

This is a unique opportunity to attend the first-ever joint CPHA-GNRHS convention, and the first-ever national CPHA convention. Nelson, B.C., was chosen as the location based on its rich history for both railroads, worldclass tourism opportunities and the beautiful natural surroundings it affords us all. Nelson is located in southern British Columbia along the CPR "southern main line", and was home to CPR divisional offices and a major yard for many years. At milepost 0.0 of the Boundary Subdivision, situated on the west arm of Kootenay Lake and on highway #3, Nelson is centrally located in the Boundary/Kootenay area of B.C. While it is a year away, the convention program is already taking shape and promises to keep you very busy for the duration of the event. We are extremely pleased to report that noted author and historian Robert D. Turner will be joining us as the banquet keynote speaker and guide for the K&S circle prototype tour. The program will also include:

 Historic and community tours

 Clinics and presentations

 Meet-and-greet patio BBQ

 CPR models and photo displays

 Model railroad layouts

 Opportunities to socialize with like-minded people

 Events for non-rail partners

CMRS BUS TRIP

CMRS Bus Trip The board is entertaining the thought of another bus trip west on the week-end of September 20th to 22nd, 2019 (hopefully we can get past Three Valley Gap this time!). A tentative agenda would be; Sept. 20th; Calgary to Three Valley Gap for overnight stay. Sept. 21st; Three Valley Gap to Kelowna and a ride on the Kettle Valley Railroad at 1:30. Then on to a wine tour for the rest of the day. Sept. 22nd, Return to Calgary with stops of interest along the way. Cost will depend on how many are going and will include meals and lodging as required and any tours. Based on the tour of two years ago the estimated cost would be on the order of $280 - 350 per person double occupancy, plus GST. Bain Spielman (Railfan Events)

KOOTENAY EXPRESS ADDITION

Kootenay Express 2019: You can still advance register for the upcoming NMRA – Pacific Northwest Region Annual Convention to be held in Cranbrook BC at the end of May. Along with layout tours, clinics, a train show, model and photography contests, a banquet, and full access to the Canadian Museum of Rail Travel, there are three prototype tours lined up. If you have ever wanted to see what goes on inside a modern sawmill, you can sign up for the tour of the Canfor Forest Products mill in Radium. A unique tour is the Down n’ Dirty tour at the Cranbrook Museum, allowing you to crawl all over, under, and through the passenger cars on display, so you can get photos and measurements of anything you might want to model. There is also a tour of the Sullivan Mine and Powerhouse in Kimberly available. If you are not already a member of the NMRA, for only $20 you can join through the Rail Pass program, which gives you full access to all NMRA benefits and programs for 6 months. This would also allow you the opportunity to attend the NMRA National Convention in Salt Lake City in July. • Maybe you didn’t know about the  BIG news:

The 6th Division is hosting a meet in Red Deer during the long May 24thweekend.  Advertised dates are May 19-21

(Friday-Sunday). More details to follow. So get your model entries, get your photo entries ready, clear you timetable, tell the wife and get ready!  There have been just Twoprevious 6th Division Meets that were held in Red Deer: 1965 saw formation of the 6th Division and again in 1967 for a 6th Division Meet.

FLAT CAR PARTICIPATION MODELING SHOW AND TELL:

The annual CMT Modeling Participation was announced in December, 2016. This year the theme is: “A Flat Car with A Load”. The flat car can be the conventional type or even a bulk-end flat. The load is one that I want you to use your modeling skills to create. Please, do not just buy a load a slap it on the flatcar, be creative and make one! This has never been a contest and if you bring for “show-and-tell” entry, CMT will give you a $10 gift card to Trains And Such. The builder will be asked to give a description of work involved in his entry. Completion should be at the March Business Meeting. If you have any other questions, please contact Dale.

CMT does have an active website (calgarymodeltrainmen.ca). Teagon Murray used to handle this site and has even though due to work conditions he is not as active as I’m sure he wished he could be but even with this time limitation he has kept up our site. Now, Sean Reilly is working to keep the site active and up to date. I’ve had a look at it, it is really neat! This is our (CMT) window to the work, many messages arrive each year asking about the club (these are not brought to the attention of the membership but Teagon alerts the President who usually responds to the inquiry).  This site is available for members to do different things: maybe you want to sell something, you can do it here. Do you have a project that you want to tell the world about, you can do it here. Please contact Sean for more details. 

OPEN HOUSE/TRAILER:

Previous to our October 29 OPEN HOUSE, the excess number of boxes and moculesin our layout room was going to make movement of our members and visitors difficult hence Ron offered temporary use of one of his utility trailers for storage purposes. Since then, CMT has become the proud owner of our own utility trailer. Ron Sauer alerted CMT to a smokin’ deal, a 2016 model trailer which has been sitting on Rons property. Two weeks ago CMT members were asked to please help transfer those boxes and modulesinto our trailer so Ron could use his unit again. I was unable to attend (working at the Foodbank) but on December 21, I hope members to did so. I’ve not heard how events went, probably will do so at the January Business Meeting.

 CMT Room Expansion:

Over the Christmas break Garth Praestagaard and Charles Gilbarth have been busy with room renovations expanding CMT another 300 square feet. I’ve attached 2 photos, the first as the walls were being moved around and the 2nd shows the result.

LAYOUT DESIGN CONSULTATIONS - Calgary Prototype Modeller’s Meet Saturday March 4, 2017

Layout Design Special Interest Group Director and Secretary Cal Sexsmith will be offering Layout Design consultations at the Calgary Prototype Modeller’s Meet Saturday March 4, 2017.

Four ½ hour sessions will be offered at the following times:

·         10:45 am to 11:15 am

·         11:30 am to 12:00 Noon

·         2:30 pm to 3:00 pm

·         3:15 pm to 3:45 pm

Advance sign up is recommended and consultations will be offered on a first come first served basis.

Measurements or a sketch of your space is essential along with some idea of what type of layout you want. This could include:

·         Scale and gauge.

·         Mainline, switching or both.

·         Continuous run or point to point.

·         Era and prototype(s).

·         Duckunders – yes, no or maybe.

·         Single deck or double deck.

·         What type or trains do you want to run?

Other useful, but optional information could include the following:

·         Any design sketches that you have come up with.

·         Other layout designs done by others that appeal to you.

·         Specific features you would like to include such as:

o   Engine terminals

o   Passenger terminals

o   Large industries/industry types

o   Large bridges/tunnels

o   Rail/Marine operations.

o   Urban vs. Rural

·         Prototype information such as maps, track charts, photographs, employee timetables.

And to finish off this edition, I received a late night call (Thursday, January 5, 2017) from Normand Croteau, member of CMT that has moved back home to Trois Rivieres, Quebec. We talked for about ½ hour. We talked about club activities, our new home and its expansion and what some of the members are uo to. TRAILER PURCHASE: A special report was presented by Ron Sauer Wednesday, November 23 regarding CMT purchase of a trailer to transport/store items such as modules to be taken to a show. Response was positive and a subsequent vote of approval to purchase followed.  

FRONT DOOR: Garth Praestagaard finally installed a plate located on the floor to stop the flow of (cold) air getting into the club room. 

ALARM: Paul Foster is working on getting an Alarm Company to install a touch panel to cancel/set an alarm.

LAYOUT ROOM EXPANSION: Garth Praestagaard will be getting materials delivered so room expansion can occur over the Christmas break.   

BREAKFAST WITH THE PRESIDENT: Date for the December Breakfast date and time should soon be announced by President Howitt T.B.A.  President Howitt may send an email reminder to all members.

DECEMBER BUSINESS MEETING: President Howitt should soon email all members the date/time of this meeting. 

6th DIVISION MEET: Unofficial information received by this author suggests the annual 6th Division Meet may be held in Red Deer during early June. 

POLAR EXPRESS:  POLAR EXPRESS: You gotta know that Christmas is just around the corner when the greatest Christmas movie ever made, POLAR EXPRESS, returns in 3D to Calgary for 1 performance only, 11 am at 2 Theatres (Chinook Cineplex, Sunridge Spectrum). This Tom Hanks movie is the real start to Christmas. Sure you can watch it at home on DVD but the 3D version is remarkable.  I’ve seen it probably 3 times in 3D when the movie first came out in 2004 and I went back again the following year for 2 more viewings, again in 3d. I’ll see you at the movie this year.  Ticket cost is only $3.00

FLAT CAR CONTEST:  For probably 6 years I’ve promoted the annual CMT Modeling Participation idea when I suggest a rather simple modeling idea and hope you respond. After all, we are a Model railroad Club so this idea seems normal. This has never been a contest and if you bring for “show-and-tell” entry, CMT will give you a $10 gift card to Trains And Such. The builder will be asked to give a description of work involved in his entry.  I announced the 2016-2017 theme at the November business Meeting the much anticipated theme:

“FLAT CAR WITH A LOAD”.

Completion should be at the March Business Meeting. There is only one limitation I need to request:

PLEASE, PLEASE DON’T just plunk down some sort of commercially ready load. Please use some imagination

CABOOSE HOBBIES TO REOPEN

Denvers’ Caboose Hobbies which lost its least and was in the process of being liquidated has been purchased by Kevin Ruble. The new owner of the business, a store that once claimed the title of “The Worlds’ Largest Model Railroad Shop”, immediately announced plans to re-establish the popular hobby outlet in the Denver area. Ruble bought the company from Duane and Joanna Miller, who last month plans to retire after efforts to find a suitable new location were unsuccessful. Caboose Hobbies was established in 1951 by Millers’ Father-In-Law, Glen Brazelton who purchased Hobby House, a general line Hobby Shop. After a few years, Brazelton changed the store name to Caboose Hobbies and focused exclusively on Model Train equipment and supplies. At its peak, Caboose Hobbies occupied nearly 19,000 square feet and supported a knowledgeable staff of almost 60 full and part time employees. Information about a new location and opening date is expected to be announced soon.

OPEN HOUSE REPORT

CMT hosted our Annual Public Open House on Saturday, October 29, 2016 in our new home layout located inside the Calgary Rehabilitation Centre, #7-11 Street, N.E.  We advertised (the key to success) our event being open 10 am-2 pm and our first visitor appeared at 9:45 (an obvious excited Model Railroader). The search for a new home took us 1-1/2 years but here we are. We found a new 700 square feet space with 300 square feet that we will take over during Christmas. Since we moved in, we have installed our own private door. All our “stuff” from our previous 2500 square foot home layout    still needs “trimming”. One member offered the services of a trailer that we moved our “stuff” into so we could host our Open House. A good showing of our membership greeted 80-100 people:  old and new friends, young and old visitors who are interested in the hobby. We may have recruited 3-5 new members. Five dozen Donuts and several pots of coffee later it was 2 pm! All we could offer to this point was our operating 8’ x 20’ modules used for shows and a clinic on Diesel Detailing that was repeated during the day. Thanks go to those who visited us and a sincere thanks to those who made financial donations. Meanwhile we will probably adopted a very nice twin level track plan with 2 helix (or is it helixes?) in December offering a lot of operating possibilities. A 1:25 scale model with 1:25 scale people viewing the new layout was available for viewing giving our guests a better idea of what we want to build. The model shows only mainline trackage but does not properly show this as a 2 level layout (arrowhead shows direction to the lower level trackage much of which is a duplicate of the upper level seen in the photo. A photo is part of this report. Overall we view our effort as successful and by the time our next Open House rolls around we should have a lot more to offer. As always we are accepting new members.

SPOKANE, Washington is hosting the 2017 PNR meet, June 6-10. Their website is now active. Hotel rates are reasonable at $99 per night based on double occupancy. There are 5 full days of activities with all sorts of tours, ladies program and much.  Here is the web site:

The site gives you information on Hotel rates, Registration costs, clinic list, tours available.  How you ask can I minimize costs:  I always suggest going with a friend to cut travelling (gas money) and Hotel expenses in half. February 11:  CMT Business Meeting.

February 21: CMRS members are invited to our first “theme open house” on February 21, 2015. Operations that day will feature steam and early diesel freights and the inaugural run of the brand new Canadian Pacific Railway Passenger train “The CANADIAN” Come and join us for some great memories from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. We are located at 1919 19 St. S.W. Please enter at the crossbucks sign.

February 21-22:  The Layout Tours are scheduled for February 21 and 22 with 7 confirmed layouts.  The layout tours will be held over two days. There are a total of seven layouts open for the tour: three on Saturday in the north and west part of the city, and one in Airdrie; and two on Sunday in the southeast part of the city, plus one in Okotoks. There are several returning layouts and two new layouts to the tour, Monty Schneider, and David Bedard. Scales this year include Z, N, HO, and O.

March 12   (THURSDAY, NOT WEDNESDAY) :  CMT Business Meeting and ELECTIONS. There are 2 critical items that need your consideration at this meeting:

Business Meeting & Elections: Over the next few weeks all CMT members should consider offering their name for the upcoming club election. After almost 2 years, I personally will not be running for President again.  Elections are held for President first, then for 4 Directors. The newly elected Directors then decide among themselves who will become Treasurer, and 2 Directors.

SUPERTRAIN CO-ORDINATOR: I’ve registered CMT into SUPERTRAIN again this year and we voted to take our travelling modules plus some individual club projects such as your Bouma square to SUPERTRAIN. What needs you attention is who will become the CMT coordinator that will arrange transportation of the modules and manpower requirements.

Your Bouma Square entry will be shown at this meeting along with a brief description. Remember that you automatically receive a $10 gift card to Trains and Such for bringing you Bouma Square entry to the March meeting and hopefully you will enter it into the CMRS Mini Meet show-and-tell the following weekend on March 15.

March 14, 2015, Calgary:   RPM meet today. Details are below.

March 15, 2015: Calgary: CMRS Spring Mini Meet.   Location: Glenmore Inn, 2720 Glenmore Trail SE (corner of Glenmore Trail & Odgen Road, SE). Today there are 2 separate events: SPRING CMRS MINI MEET AND CMT FLEA MARKET, Vendors arrive at 8pm, setup has to be done before this.  The Mini Meet is scheduled for March 15 with 5 clinics confirmed but Io can’t tell you what they are just now, stay tuned.

 April 18-19:   SUPERTRAIN. Remember:  NEW LOCATION! at the Genesis Centre,7555 Falconridge Blvd N.E.

April 18:  SUPERTRAIN Saturday Night Gala. Tickets cost $35.00 each, Cocktails @ 5:00 pm, Dinner @ 6:45 pm.  Groups or six or more can reserve a table. Please let Linda know when you reserve your tickets if you wish to reserve a table as well. To reserve your tickets contact Linda Laroche either by phone at 403-934-1372 or email at LBQ@shaw.ca. Tickets can be picked up at the Mini Meet on March 15th or the Volunteer Orientation in April.

April 25: The last CMT Open House will be on Saturday April 25th, 2015 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. This event will be held one week following SUPERTRAIN.

April 26: We have more fun being planned for Sunday, April 26th from 1pm-4pm. While not part of the Open House, we have challenged Garth Praestagaard to place as many of his shorty ore cars as possible on a train and run the train, a really long train, over the layout, hopefully behind his pair of Yellowstone articulated steam engines (if they are back from being customized) or perhaps 3-SD9 head end power, probably mid train end and pusher power too. Garth has the unusual knack of collecting shorty ore cars, the prototype found in Michigan and at last count he believes his collection exceeds 1200 of these cars. At home, these sit next to 4 Walters ore ships. The number of cars in operation at CMT will exceed 200 he says, who really knows how many will run on the CMT layout…300? 

Following this weekend the saws, sledge hammers, screwdrivers and packing boxes will soon be out. If a sale of surplus items is feasible, watch for announcements of the event soon.

BREAKFAST WITH THE PRESIDENT continues to be successful.  Normally the Breakfast is held the Saturday just before the Monthly Business Meeting.  Next date will be Saturday, February 7 at 0930 hrs.  All members are invited to this no-host Breakfast and some members even return to CMT to do some work on the layout.  Easy was to get there: travel East on 9th Avenue just about as far as you can go, and just as you emerge from going under the CP Rail line to Edmonton, turn Left into the Truck Stop. Usually 5-7 members gather at for Breakfast and friendship.

SAFTEY VESTS  TO BE WORN DURING PARKING DUTIES: Paul Douglas has donated a 2nd Glo-In-The-Dark Saftey Vest to CMT so now I expect both members pulling Parking Duties to wear these for your own safety and visibility of our customers who park at CMT.

Entry date is the March 12 Business Meeting. CMT members will then have a ready - made entry for the CMRS mini meet in March 15, 2015.

BOUMA SQUARES:   CMRS is again running what I call “Bouma Squares” Challenge starting at the upcoming fall Mini-Meet and set for completion at the March 15, 2015 Minimeet.  Peter has already cut some 5 inch squares, and also some 4x6 rectangles for more variety (sorry, you lose one square inch if you go with the 4x6). Make sure you pick one up at the Fall Minimeet, and start planning your module now.  All participants will be eligible for the gift certificate draw. Last year a $100 Gift Certificate was drawn for from all “Bouma Squares” entries. Remember the CMT March Business Meeting (March 8) will see at least 2 big events: Your Bouma Square   and CMT Elections. Remember that you automatically receive a $10 gift card just for bringing you Bouma Square entry for presentation into the CMRS Mini Meet the following weekend.  

SUPERTRAIN: Members voted to not have the modules but member project and timesaver. CMT is now registered as a participant with our 20’ x 22’ modular display and I hope an extra display of members projects. Dinner tickets  are available for a wonderful evening of food and entertainment.  

INCREASED INTEREST IN CONSTRUCTION ON THE LAYOUT: It’s great to see so many members working on different parts of the layout. Remember, the layout is a learning tool for you to practice for your own layouts.

FLAMES HOCKEY PARKING:   A credit towards dues of $10 per event parked is provided to members.

MORE ON THE FUTURE OF PAINT:  These two (acrylic based) lines seem to be taking over the Model Railroad paint industry. Many of the Floquil colors have been renamed and included in other Testor's lines like Model Master, and I  believe Scalecoat  and Modelflex (acrylic) are still out there. The recently held post-Christmas CMT Brunch saw 8 club members and assorted other friends and family enjoy the fine food in the Strathmore Station. Again, members ibn good standing received $20 credit towards their meal which cost $20.

Regrettably our CMT member Mike Gauthier has moved since our last Business meeting to the Vancouver area from Hanna to be closer to family.

A reminder of the March 15/16 weekend: a 2-day Model Railroad event weekend. Saturday will see the annual RPM meet  at  ST.ANDREWS PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 703 HERITAGE DRIVE S.W., location of the annual October Southbank Auction and knot the Glenmore Inn then on Sunday is the combined CMT Flea Market and CMRS mini-meet at the Glenmore Inn. Brookes needs CMT volunteers to appear on Sunday at the Glenmore Inn about 7am to place tables/tablecloths and chairs then get the room ready for merchants to setup.  Please notify Brookes that you are available.

A 100 year old Railroad trestle owned by The North Carolina Railroad Company in the city of Durham, North Carolina has plenty of “low clearance” signs (11 foot 8 inches) starting 3 blocks ahead of the trestle, road speed has been reduced to 25 MPH so there is plenty of time to change your route. However each month there is a least1 truck that gets its top peeled off. Pretty funny stuff!

Passenger Trains and Their Facilities, Engines, Cars, and Various Buildings

Our goal: To provide a venue to exhibit how models are built that attempt to accurately reflect their real world counterparts past or present. Emphasis is placed on sharing information and modeling techniques and most importantly, in displaying one’s own models.

This is basically a “Show and Tell” meet where modelers can bring engines, rolling stock, structures, etc. to show. These items need not be in the finished state. This is a chance for interaction between builders and modelers who would like to learn from the models being shown. In other words, an exchange of ideas.

It’s all about bringing your models and your friends to see lots of superb railroad models, to share techniques and get inspired to finish your projects. There is no model judging, just an opportunity to meet fellow modelers, share tips and learn new techniques. We will provide an opportunity to meet with fellow modelers, see lots of great models, share tips and learn. For those NMRA members working towards the MMR program, sanctioned judging will be available. 

CLINICS AND PROTOTYPE PRESENTATIONS RUNNING ALL DAY

Clinic 1:  "Slide Resurrection" - a presentation on techniques for saving film slides to digital 10:00                                                                format by Dr. George Barr.

Clinic 2:  Van Horne style stations by Don Thomas. 11:00

Clinic 4: "God Bless Hall" – a nostalgic review of many of the Prairie branch lines that were 14:30                                                                saved from abandonment by the 1977 Hall Commission by Les Kozma.

Also on display will be Northern Alberta Railway stock cars built from the new Westerfield kits.

I see on Trainorders.com that rail service to Sydney, NS will end at the end of December, 2014.  The bridge at Grand Narrows may come out if they rip up the line.  That is also the line that goes through Orangedale which we saw.  The line will end at Pt. Hawkesbury from Truro .

SIX LOST DIESEL LOCOMOTIVES:  Several months ago 6 Diesel locomotives and some oddball parts were found and CMT has made every effort to locate their owner. No one has stepped forward so I feel that we can now auction these off. The club voted at the October 2014 to Auction these at the November Business Meeting. I have sent digital photos to all members with 3 basic rules: (1) Members in good standing can bid, this means you need to have club dues paid up to date, (2) No minimum bid although I hope there is some bidding for each locomotive (3) Cash bids only!   Gary Ward will be the Auctioneer. I will bring these for viewing Wednesday, November 5, a week before the Business Meeting.  The list follows:

BREAKFAST WITH THE PRESIDENT continues to be successful.  Normally the Breakfast is held the Saturday just before the Monthly Business Meeting.  Next date will be Saturday, September 13 at 0930 hrs.  All members are invited to this no-host Breakfast and some members even return to CMT to do some work on the layout.  Easy was to get there: travel East on 9th Avenue just about as far as you can go, and just as you emerge from going under the CP Rail line to Edmonton, turn Left into the Truck Stop. Usually 5-7 members gather at 9:30 for Breakfast and friendship.    Should be an excellent Breakfast this time since the President will be on Holidays again.

SEPTEMBER BUSINESS MEETING:  President Sproule will be absent (Holidays) so your Executive team will run the meeting. Gain Rees is our co-cordinator for the upcoming Heritage Park Railway Days and will be firming up his final details.

HERITAGE PARK RAILWAY DAYS REPORT: Heritage Park has approved our application for CMT to participate in the 2014 Heritage Park Railway Days set for September 27-28, 2014. We requested space measuring 22’ x 22.’ This and more is available in the 2nd level of the Gunn Dairy Barn.   Gavin is our coordinator.  Trains and Such is picking up the cost of lunch for Model Rail Club members.   Don’t forget to consider attending the Saturday evening dinner.

WEATHERING CLINIC:  Five CMT members attended on June 28 a great Participation clinic presented by Brian Keay. After viewing his HO gauge layout, he presented a 2 hour clinic on the basics using a water soluable product called Gouche. This allows you to make mistakes (and we all do) then wash them away until sealed. Part 2 I think will be in the fall and we will learn how to use “pencils” and other basics. I’ve seen how attending members have really caught on to what we learned, particularily Gary Ward. I will advise those who attended Part 1 the date of Part 2.  We were then welcomed to the home layout HO scale layout of Roger Walker for another hour. 

TACOMA REPORT:  Many of you have asked for a report from the past PNR meet in Tacoma attended by Al Matchett and myself. Registration count was 174 primary registrants, 39 family, 2 youth, and 12 single-day Registrations and a total of 10 no-shows.

SCENERY CLINIC: I’m prepared to construct a small module to become the base of an experiment on how to apply different types of scenery with a track located as part of the module. Interested members can learn how to apply plaster bandage called hard shell, then work onto the creation and use and application of rock moulds, ground cover, static grass (CMT owns a static grass applicator), and perhaps water. I think I’d like to start this clinic in October or November going in stages towards February but we’ll see how progress changes the schedule. Interested members: If you are interested in participating  please email me to confirm by mid September.

OCTOBER NIGHT RUN:  I think a Friday night in October would be the right time for a late Friday Op session without room lighting, just the light from locomotive headlights, flashlights, miners lamps and so on. Start time may be around 10 pm. I’ll elaborate more later.

PORTLAND NMRA MEET: I’m pleased to report that 4 CMT members have been asking questions  about how they can travel to Portland or what occurs at the meet and many more questions. I personally am registered. There are another 6 Calgary Modelers and 2 from Lethbridge that I hear are also thinking about attending the meet. Remember, to cut expenses travel together, maybe 4 in a van!(it’s been done before).

REQUESTS THAT MY INTEREST YOU: The public watches our  CMT web site and Teagon Murray forwarded the following 2 requests to me. I forward these to you for your consideration. I told these 2 gentlemen that I would include these requests in the next CMT newsletter.

CHINOOK AND HOBBY WEST CHANGE OF OWNERSHIP: Ownership Change: New owners of Chinook and Hobby West took over August 1 from Rob and Mike Ford. Jessie is the new owner, (apologies for forgetting his last name). He is 1 of 2 new owners. I don’t know too much more but go see Jess and support him. 

NMRA MERIT JUDGING AT CMT:   I’m pleased to report that Gary brought down a Walthers laser cut wooden, Macon’s kit # 933-3321 and asked me to give comments as seen from the eyes of a model judge in the NMRA-AP Program.  I gave him several positive comments on how he could improve his model with a very minimum amount of word. He agreed with all my comments and I know he will come back with a better model. Gary is considering attending the NMRA meet in Portland and he might just take his model as a contest entry or just participate in the AP Program.  Well done Gary! The offer stands for anyone else to do as Gary did.

RMC Magazine ceased operations this month, a real loss to the Hobby but not all is lost. A new owner emerges: White River Productions Acquires Railroad Model Craftsman and Railfan & Railroad Magazines from Carstens Publications. White River Productions has acquired Railroad Model Craftsman and Railfan & Railroad magazines effective Sept 1, 2014. The asset purchase agreement between Carstens Publications and White River Productions was completed Thursday, August 28, 2014

Founded in 1992 by Kevin Eu Daly, President, White River Productions is currently producing 22 historical society magazines plus calendars, books, and other peripheral items such as membership brochures, advertising rate cards, annual meet announcements, and ballots. The company also publishes Model Railroad News, Railroads Illustrated, Passenger Train Journal, The Railroad Press magazine, and now Railroad Model Craftsman and Railfan & Railroad magazines. The company began when owner Kevin Eu Daly decided to write and publish the book Missouri Pacific Diesel Power. He produced The Eagle for the Missouri Pacific Historical Society from 1993 to 1996 and picked up the editor’s reins again for the MPHS in 2010. In between, he has edited and produced numerous historical society publications. His wife, Nadean, manages day-to-day operations at White River Production

And finally……………..Let’s not lose focus that we have a major layout to work on. The fall has arrived and many members have tackled different areas on the layout and please keep up the good work.

HAPPY CANADA DAY

BREAKFAST WITH THE PRESIDENT usually occurs the 2nd Saturday of each month. Since Stampede is spread over 2 Saturdays including our BREAKFAST WITH THE PRESIDENT, (where CMT members will be taking up Parking duties), our CMT Breakfast will not occur on July  and will restart in August. Meanwhile, Canadian Pacific has decided to host the CMT Breakfast under their own brand name. Harrison said to me that he has recognized the idea has being so good at CMT that he wants to try to host their own Breakfast at Canadian Pacific and invites all CMT members   

The GMD-1’s have arrived and Garth has his. I also see Rapido is releasing a model of the Confederation train from 1967, (see below).

The 35th Southbank Auction set for Saturday, October 18 has a new viewing and start time for the Auction. Still located at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, 703 Heritage Drive S.W., doors open for setup/display/viewing at 0930 hrs. and new start time for the Auction action  is 1100hrs.

Weathering Clinic was a success on Saturday, June 28. CMT bought the coffee and donuts, Brian Keay hosted 8 modelers then some of us went across the street to visit Roger Walker’s home layout on HO and On3 scale. Brian showed us some really neat methods of weathering which can even be eliminated with water if we think we made a mistake. Brian has offered of run part 2 of his weathering techniques later on but I think it’s a good idea to practice what we have learned first. Brian taught us to use Gouche water soluable colors, how to get that rusted appearance in very fine dots and more. Part 2 will cover water soluable pencils  and more!  Roger has a really layout that runs very well and his scenery is great since he was a Geologist. Roger is a MMR.

Al Matchett and myself have returned from the annual PNR meet held in Tacoma and will file a joint report. From the Convention however I want to suggest 2 things to CMT members:

(1)   I am a serious advocate for the NMRA Merit Program known as the AP program. To help you become a better modeler at the very least and to help you get model/photo entries ready to take with you to the 2015 NMRA Convention in Portland or future PNR meets in Salmon Arm (2016) and Spokane (2017) or just to improve you modeling techniques,  I’ll bring in qualified judges to CMT to comment on, or pre-judge your model sometime after the October. Meanwhile, my best suggestion for you is to take digital photos of you model(s) and do your own judging. Remember, the camera never lies. A digital photo shows your mistakes. Please contact me so I can provide initial suggestions.

(2)   The 2015 NMRA Convention to be held in Portland from August 23-30, 2015. Their website has all the information you will need.  I’ve found that trips like this are affordable if you share accommodation and travel expenses. These meets are really a lot of fun, you learn and see so many new modeling techniques, layouts and you meet new friends so plan now to attend this or a future meet somewhere. 

FLAMES Hockey schedule is out for 2014-2015. They appear to start their regular season with a home game October 8 against Vancouver (Home game). There are only a few Wednesday games that affect CMT:

October 8 (Vancouver), December 31(Edmonton), January 7 (Detroit), February 4 (Vancouver), February 18 (Minnesota), March 11 (Anaheim), March 25 (Dallas), and end of the regular season is an away game on April 11.

I note with interest that RAPIDO is coming out with a release of The Confederation Train.

As part of the Expo 67 festivities a special train was created that toured the country promoting both Canadian history and the Expo. Equipment was provided by both CN and CP which included FP9As from both roads, a CN steam generator car and a consist of smooth-side passenger cars – all adorned with a bold and colourful paint scheme specially designed for the train. As a special audio treat, additional horns were added to the locomotives, tuned to replicate the opening four notes of “O Canada” !   The train departed Victoria, BC on January 9. It crossed the country, stopping at more than sixty towns and cities. Hundreds of thousands visited the train and its exhibits celebrating Canada’s centennial year and Expo 67. The train tied up for the last time in Montreal on December 5.

Rapido is pleased to announce the HO scale version of the Confederation Train. The Confederation Train set will include accurate FP9A locomotives (CN and CP versions) with DCC and sound; one working steam generator car; two baggage cars, and four intermediate cars all specially decorated in the train’s unique colour scheme. Thanks to our friends at ESU (who may be even slightly more nuts that we are) we will even include the “O Canada” horn notes on the dual-mode sound decoders!

RAPIDO also offers a special add-on set with six additional cars decorated as the display cars that toured Canada on the train with exhibits and historical displays.

These models will NOT be available separately and production of this train will be strictly limited! RAPIDO need at least 300 orders to proceed. Please do not delay, get your reservation in today!

Lots to catch up so let’s get started.

SUPERTRAIN 2014  is now history pulling in attendance of 12,200 (6,200 on Saturday alone) for the show weekend of April 12-13. SUPERTRAIN now is possibly the top Train show in Canada and amongst the best in North America. The program handout listed 40 Hobby Exhibitors and 58 Commercial & Display Exhibitors booths. Beyond the obvious excitement of the show, SUPERTRAIN supports the Calgary Foodbank, Girl Guides (selling cookies), Boy Scouts (collecting pop cans).

Congratulations go first of all to Al Matchett who was our Coordinator who made sure the layout ran very well and arranged for a Rental Van Next.  Thanks to all members who spruced up the modules . The new replacement bridge section worked on principally by Gavin, Cher and Garth and assorted other worked on.  

CMT members represented ourselves and club well with our club shirts all ironed with a sharp crease.  Membership turnout was 21 of 28 members  present during sometime of the weekend. Load in was earlier than we were told, setup took about 2 hours thanks to a laser level  loaned to us by Gary saving lots of time. The SUPERTRAIN move-in crew were well prepared with wheeled dollies and manpower helping us load in.  Load out time was good too

I observed 23 layouts of various sizes; 14 with rope barriers or plastic see through windows and 7 without and CMT and was the only layout without a barrier of any sort. I don’t think that caused any problems with little fingers but we also had lots of members watching out. There were lots of people taking pictures of our layout, many asking questions too. Parking lot rennovations didn’t help but this is a 1 year inconvenience. There was even a Documentary film maker in attendance shooting up the show . Banquet speaker Tom Price emphasied that we, the hobbyist, should keep doing what we enjoy doing for mainly ourselves (to keep active) and for the public.  Took me 2 days to recover, Shawn also. Next year dates are April 18-19.  

HERITAGE PARK RAILWAY DAYS REPORT: I have received an application for CMT to participate in the 2014 Heritage Park Railway Days set for September 27-28, 2014. From our April Business meeting, members decided to participate with the feeling that we should expose ourselves as much as possible to the public. Gavin has stepped forward to be our coordinator. I know that all CMT members will give Gain our full support just as in the case of Al Matchett did for SUPERTRAIN 2014. 

There are new items to be addressed: Trains and Such is picking up the cost of lunch for Model Rail Clubs so an exact headcount will be needed. Photo contest: This is an area that makes no sense to me: There is no photo contest as in years past but Park organizers tell me their plans are not yet confirmed for a photo contest unless you have photos of Heritage park Railway operations.  Don’t forget to consider attending the Saturday evening dinner.  Give Gavin your suggestions as to what imrovements  CMT can offer such as using the timesaver?  A demo module separate from the others in operation?  A scenery display? A flat panel display showing our layout? Construction of kits?  Weathering demo? DCC information booth?  Don’t forget that with your ideas comes the need for manpower.

ANNIVERSARY CARS: As I suggested announced at the April Business Meeting, we have an excess of 75th Anniversary Cars. I’m looking for innovative ways to sell these. Please email your suggestions. 

SPRING OPEN HOUSE: We had the annual Open House on Saturday, April 26 from 10 am – 4 pm. The layout operated well, Anniversary Cars were for sale. We had the Time Saver up and running, boxes of donuts and coffee were available, the weather was OK and we had a lower than normal amount of visitors. 

FROM THE APRIL BUSSINESS MEETING:

BUILDING MAINTENANCE: There needs to be some building maintenance done this year, principally as I understand it in the area of removing the West canopy over the West parking strip and replacing then exposed areas and cleanout of the evestrough. Work will be under the direction of Ron Sauer.  Painting the building is also to be considered, both ideas need good weather.

SQUIRREL REPORT: Rocky  has left the building.

NEW MEMBERSHIPS ACCEPTED: New members accepted into CMT are Paul Foster, Brian Zhuang and John McBean. All 3 have shown interest with club activities and have helped with operations such as SPERTRAAIN and I know that all 3 will be valuable additions to the club. If you have not had the chance, please introduce yourself.  

IN HOSPITAL: Two friends of CMT are currently laid up, Bob Hadlow is still in the Foothills while Gord Johnson is in the Rockyview.  

WEATHERING CLINIC: I will be sending to you under a separate e-mail registration information for a June 28 Weathering Clinic, should be fun!  

OPERATING SESSIONS: Andrew Love has presented Part 1 of a great Operation Session talking about how real and model train move, reasons why and how CMT can operated like the real railroads do. Part 2 has been announced for Wednesday, May 7.

CMRS Slide Night

Slide Night 2013: Friday November 8th at 7:30 pm is our 2013 slide night, and we will meet at River Park Community Church (3818 14A Street SW, Calgary). Over the last year some of you must have taken some (train related) photographs other members could be interested in viewing. We have two confirmed presenters and are awaiting decisions by another two, which could be an opportunity for you to call or email John Lund with your proposed presentation or potpouri contribution.

Southbank Auction and CMRS Minimeet wrap-up report

Many of you missed another great CMRS mini-meet Sunday, October 20, 2013. In the last newsletter I laid out the program which consisted of clinics and AGM. Proudly I can report that CMRS had a good financial year with thanks to SUERTRAIN 2013.

75th ANNIVERSAY CARS

Our 75th Anniversary cars have arrived.  At the October Business Meeting, membership decided to set costs for members in good standing at $20 for the first of each type with following cars at $30 regardless of the type of car.  Our cost is $22 per car.  To date there have been 17-18 cars of each type sold. Again, many thanks go to Al Machett for coordinating the purchase and delivery with my thanks to Andrew Love for setting up the Financial end of the transaction.  The boxcar doors open wide so I know that Pierre Ingold will be buying plenty since he told me that is the only kind of boxcar he buys now to show off an interior load.  Below is a suggestion of how to make your new car run better.  Please bring yours down to leave until after our Open House.  

Cars being left on the layout should operate smoothly and have proper operating couplers and steel wheels. Here is a suggestion to assure better operation. Suggested couplers are Kadee #5 or #58. Wheels should be steel with insulated axle.  A modeler should clean out the inside of each journal box to assure smooth axle rotation with the aid of a reamer. Steel wheel sets, either 33 or 36 inch diameter should replace those plastic wheels that come in the kit.  For the purist in the crowd the 33” diameter wheel is suitable for the Boxcar and 36” diameter wheel is suitable for the gondola. The reason is that the gondola carries a heavier load but for the hobbyist in the crowd, really, either size wheel works just fine.  CMT may be considering a bulk purchase to outfit Anniversary cars that will stay to operate on the layout and so you may want to add onto a club purchase. This matter needs discussion at a CMT Business Meeting

PETER BOUMA MODELLING CONTEST

CMRS member Peter Bouma kicked off a great modeling idea which he says below. I think this is a really neat idea and hope you give the idea your maximium support by entering a small diorama. 

“Just build anything on a 5" x 5" square base and bring it back to the spring mini meet. The Scale/Era/Theme etc. doesn't matter. All dioramas will be entered into a draw for a $100 gift certificate at a local hobby shop, so no judging is involved. Really the only rule is that elements of the diorama are planted on the base (tree limbs and scenic elements can over hang the sides, they just have to be attached to the base). The whole goal of the contest is to encourage people to build something. I have already told free-mo to think about making their diorama so that it can be incorporated into their layouts or modules. Hopefully this contest will be a motivator for people to build something.

PSX 2014 REPORT (TACOMA):

Preliminary Convention details are now out for the PNR2014 meet in Tacoma, WA, June 18-22. (www.pn2014.com). From my experience the Registration and Accommodation costs are really affordable I’ve long advocated that if you travel with a Hobby friend then all cost are cut in half.  

The Primary registrant Registration cost is $59 only to March, 2014, $79 from then on. The wind-up Banquet cost is $35 and best of all is the Accommodation rate of $95/night. Three prototype tours go to

Tacoma Rail Tour ($40), Mount Rainier Scenic Railroad Tour ($100) or to The Northwest Railway Museum Tour ( $50). Registration costs for wives or others are also available.

The 2014 PNR Convention will have a full slate of contests for you to enter. In addition, we are currently working on setting up a special model contest where all contestants start with the same model and are allowed to spend no more than $25 extra to come up with something unique. If you went to Boise PNR meet last year you will remember the great results from their contest. Watch this convention site for more information as we finalize the contest.

Special Structure Kit Contest Rules

2014 Olds Model Train, Hobby and Craft Show

Greetings Fellow Modellers, 

Welcome , the Olds Model Train, Hobby and Craft Show is happening once again on Sat Feb 22nd & Sun Feb 23rd , 2014. This year we are again in the Frank Grisdale Hall Gymnasium at Olds College as it provides good space, onsite security, free onsite parking, and access to the onsite cafeteria.

We will be able to set up starting Friday afternoon February 21st at about 2pm(to be confirmed).

The Mountain View Model Railroad Club in the Didsbury Museum is sponsoring the show again this year.  This show is our primary fund raiser and without it the club would need to rely heavily on members to fund the development of our layout.

We had received several requests from attendees last year to provide a venue for the crafters in our families and community.  We have expanded our show this year to include model trains, hobbies and crafts as a way to appeal to a broader audience and increase attendance.

If you are interested in being in the show please fill out the attached application. As usual there is no cost for demonstration layouts, modellers and crafters.  If you plan to sell product while at the show the cost for vendors is $100.00 for a 10x10 space including up to 3 tables. _Deadline is Jan 15th 2014 for registration as space is limited, so register early to ensure you get your space.

Admission will be $5.00 per person with children 5 & under Free.

We hope you can attend either as a participant or a visitor and promote the event in your community.

 THE END OF AN ERA

After   48 years, Fine Scale Miniatures is retiring from manufacturing HO craftsman   kits. Therefore, "The Jamestown Water Stop" will be my very last   kit. I now want to spend more of my time maintaining and operating my   Franklin & South Manchester Railroad, along with other interests. I would   like to thank all my FSM customers and fans throughout the years. I hope my   kits have given you a lot of enjoyment and modeling pleasure. Thanks again,   George Sellios

 

AT THE CLUB

CMT 75th ANNIVERSARY  CLUB CARS:  Al  Matchett  tells me that production has started over the summer at ACCURAIL so I have to assume production has started and that our deadline should not be a problem. If you have any  memorabellia (spelling??) from your time at CMT and wish to display for our Open House, please let Dale know. 

 HERITAGE PARK RAILWAY DAYS:  Over the summer I sent in the required paperwork so we can participate. Setup can start after noon Friday, September 27 and teardown starts at 5pm on Sunday, September 29. Gary has acquired the use of necessary transportation to move the modules. As in past years, following the September Business Meeting, the modules are usually setup for a shakedown and check into their use.

Please get your photos ready for the Railway Days Photo  Contest . During the summer I sent you the required form and the same is also available on the Heritage Park Home Page, just go to Railway Days information.  Deadline for submissions is between September 13-24.

We will need manpower during the weekend and to CMT will offset meal pricing as outlined. A few members have indicated their willingness to help setup/teardown but just a handful have offered to actually help during the weekend. If you can spare3 or more hours either day please let Harvey know.

KIRBY CENTRE PRESENTATION:  Vlad Maritiu and Paul Douglas will be at Kirby Centre presenting a fine ½ hour presention of CMT and Model Railroading in general and CMT in particular. I will be looking for a report (written) or oral at the October Business Meeting.

NMRA CONVENTIONS:   I’ve been to several of the National Conventions and they are always fun and I always get my monies worth.  In fact for those not aware, Calgary was the site of the 1979 NMRA Convention. CMT and all members played a vital part in that meet 

The 2013 Peachtree Convention held in Atlanta, July14-20. In the NMRA magazine following the Peachtree Convention, NMRA President said in his Post Convention wrap-up column:” The (modeling) contest was inspiring as always. There were not enough entries, but the quality level was very high”.

So you don’t think your modeling skills are up to entering a model? Consider this true story from a PNR Convention that was held in Calgary in the mid 1980’s. There were no entries in the Freight Car category so the PNR President at the time went to Trains and Such, bought an Athearn 40 foot boxcar kit, quickly assembled it in his Hotel Room, then entered it into the Contest Model. There were no other entries in this category so he won FIRST PLACE.  

My point is encourage you to at least enter a model into a Convention. I am not a “ribbon chaser” but if one comes along then what the heck, I’ll take it home, I’m no dummy!   I’ve been to lots of meets where the same story is just about the same.

There are a lot of great models being built at CMT. Go ahead, ask the person who built that model (engine, structure) how he did it!   Ask the person doing some scenery how he did it!  You are the person benefitting from another persons experience. Ask how a person did that great weathering job what methods were used.

There is a great opportunity coming up on October 20th for you to participate in a Show and Tell session, part of the CMRS Minimeet and AGM. Details about this area are in this newsletter seen below.

There may be another Model railroad Convention next March in Calgary. Here is your chance to “get your feet wet” in terms of model competition. Judges will not bite your head off, rather give great adse on making you and your model  better, and we call use some encouragment and  improvement.

And if that’s not enough Convention news, plan to attend PSX2014, details are in this newsletter. Tacoma is near Calgary sp go with a friend (and take an entry).

The 2015 NMRA Convention will be held in Portland, Oregon from August 23-30. Their website is:  www.nmra2015portland.org.    Here is your chance to look forward to attending.  Why not car-pool and share Hotel room expenses with a friend, that’s what I’ve done in recent years, I can’t afford to go alone.  I have a rule in attending any meet: For all the work that organizers go through to pull one of these events off, it is the least I can do but to take an entry of some sort so I usually take a photo, model, diorama and sometimes all 3. Same holds true for the Heritage Park Photo Contest.  There are 2 main types of model categories,  Scratchbuilt and Kit. That’s right, Kits!  The present contest rules allow the entry of kits. Rules can be found on the NMRA Home page.  

         

 CMRS Minimeet and AGM, Sunday October 20th

The Minimeet and AGM will be held at the Glenmore Inn on October 20th. This is a brief announcement of the clinics. Please check the CMRS website about mid-September for full details of the clinics.

In the morning, GREG CAVE will present a clinic on YARD DETAILS. This will include all the clutter, buildings and somewhat abandoned rolling stock typically found in yards. BRIAN KEAY will present a clinic on NEW WEATHERING TECHNIQUES that do not involve airbrushing. Instead, he will discuss the use of new materials such as gouache (watercolour paints) applied with cosmetic sponges. PETER BOUMA’s clinic will discuss ways of DISTRESSING, WEATHERING AND PAINTING PLASTIC to make it look more like wood. Finally, ROGER WALKER will attempt to KEEP THINGS SQUARE – tips on assembling plastic and wooden kits to be sure walls are square, windows neatly cut out, etc.

While all of this is going on, the SHOW AND TELL room will be open. Please plan to bring some models to share with all the attendees.

After the AGM, there will be two functions in the afternoon. DAVE BEDARD will present a clinic based on CHOOSING THE RIGHT DECODER – which is right for you, what they can do and the advantages and disadvantages of using ones that can be programmed from your computer. And BRIAN KEAY will present a continuation of his morning clinic, in a hands-on format. With a limit of about 20 participants, Brian will supply brushes, sponges and paints (you supply an appropriate car), and you can go to it under Brian’s watchful eye.

PSX 2014 Tacoma Progress Continues

The Fourth Division guys have put it together and are moving forward with a "knock Out" convention for 2014.

The convention will run from Wednesday June 18, through Saturday June 21. Prototype activities planned are an all day visit to Mt Rainier Scenic Railroad, and half day tours at Tacoma Rail, and Snoqualmie Pass.Non rail activities will include the Chihuly Glass Museum, LeMay Car Museum, Natural History Museum including the PSMRE layout, and Boeing Museum of Flight. Layout tours during the convention will include self drive outing to the Olympia area, Tacoma, and the Kitsap Penninsula. There will be a number of layouts open and availabe for visits during the pre and post convention periods.

The convention site is the LaQuinta Inn in Tacoma, adjacent to the Tacoma Dome and with immediate access to I-5. The basic web site is up with some information about the major tours that will be offered. The team has worked hard to schedule the tours so all will availabe to attendees. Keep in mind that, as with previous PNR conventions, the primary tours will be limited capacity and we expect them to sell out early. When we open registration, it will be important to get your registration in and to purchase your tour tickets early. There will be a separate alert message when the Regisrtration process is openned.

Mt Rainer tour is scheduled for all day on Thursday and includes a train ride (what else), torur of the site, and a special lunch. Tacoma rail is scheduled for Friday morning and Snoqualmie for Friday afternoon.

AT THE CLUB

CMT 75th ANNIVERSARY  CLUB CARS:   Brookes Harrow tells me that our cheque has reached ACCURAIL so I have to assume production has started. Brookes says that our deadline should not be a problem.

Teagon continues to lay in the Priddis station platform in Priddis and shrub clearing was completed after we could get to the club after the flood.

RAPIDO visited CMT Wednesday, 31 July. A full report will be in the next issue.

Cleanup continues around the Clubhouse, clearing brush and weeds.

September 29-29 is again the place to be, it’s Heritage Park Railway Days. I’ve filed the necessary paperwork over the summer allowing us to participate.(Dale)

ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS

KIRBY CENTRE EXPO

 Vlad Maritiu has arranged an opportunity to have CMT show ourselves to the community by participating in the upcoming annual Kirby Centre “KERBY EXPO CLUB PRESENTATION”.  I think this is an excellent chance for CMT to show ourselves and what we do in the Community. This Expo may be another chance to link our future needs for a new home layout to someone out there attending the Expo. The Kirby Centre is excited about the opportunity to  showcase local Clubs to their guests at the Expo.

The Expo runs Thursday, September 5 and Friday, September 6 at The Kerby Centre. Vlad has tentatively arranged for Friday morning, September 6 from 10 am to 11:30 am and wishes assistance. Due to space limitations we may only be able to bring a single module as a stationary exhibit and or the switching puzzle as an interactive display.

MIKE LOVE, June 23, 1978 – July 20, 2013

Mike got down to the club as time allowed due to his job of truck driving. His friendly manor was infectious and always he always had a story about where his last trip took him. Six CMT members attended Mikes Funeral on Friday, July 25th and heard stories about his you from his parents Wayne and Donna and later from his fiancée Christy with other relatives and friends adding their stories about Mike. Mike was later taken to Kelowna for burial.

BILL KERR, August 11, 1951-July 14, 2013

Bill Kerr, my friend. Bill was a soft spoken On30 modeler. Bill attended the last SUPERTRAIN show (in a wheel chair) and we spent a ½ hour talking about the hobby and life experiences. Bill was a excellent modeler and will be missed.

NORM SPROULE, my Dad, Sept 5, 1918-July 9, 2013

 Norman Sproule - my Dad. Well what can a guy to say about his Dad!  He first exposed me to this wonderful hobby of Model Railroading at about age 3 when he took me to a CMT Open House then held in the attic of The Coste House in about 1951 in the upscale area of Mt. Royal. He was a Pharmacist and father of myself and 2 younger sisters and loved Model Railroading ( ah!........... This is who I got the hobby bug from) and he especially like English Trains and Model Trains too, Reading- especially about History of any kind, Travel, Coin and Stamp Collector and was an active Amateur Radio operator (VE6AQH).  He will be sorely missed by all his children and Grandchildren including CMT member Shawn Sproule. I miss you Dad.

NOVEMBER  16,  CMT 75th ANNIVERSARY:   This will be our Fall Open House.

CMT 75th ANNIVERSARY  CLUB CARS:    I’m happy to report  that a positive membership vote was taken to order 60 of each of the 2 cars below at the May business Meeting. The 3 bay hopper will have Red lettering on a Gray body and the 50 foot boxcar will be white lettering on a Blue body. Brookes displayed is O scale Boxcar from the Toronto Model O Scale Model Railroad Club to show just what a special run car looks like.  Al Matchett is clearing up any remaining details as he orders these cars for delivery in the fall in time for our November Open House. The first car of each type of car will be available for sale to club members at $10 each, more of each type will be sold to members at cost and the price that cars  will be sold to the general public as not been decided yet.

AND FROM THE JUNE 2013 BUSINESS MEETING:

NEW PRESIDENT ELECTED:   Dale Sproule was elected by the club membership at the June 2013 Business Meeting.  Membership is a priority item, gaining new members, involving present members in the construction of the layout and members reaching out to the community through our involvement in shows such as SUPERTRAIN. Our 75th Anniversary is coming in November and we need to have the layout and club house ready to show our continual improvement and moving forward to the Model Railroad Community in Calgary.  

ON THE LAYOUT

Have you seen Gary’s Concrete plant? Make sure you go to the back of the layout. Eventually he will have the rotating drum rock crusher rotating.

THE FINAL LEG: Discussion recently led to a thought by some members to commence construction the final leg of the layout! What final keg you ask. So did I. This unbuilt part of the layout will extend the narrow gauge (that is presently hidden by a burlap sack) between Priddis and the Mountain part of the layout highlighted by a Snow shed. 

Garth and Shawn have prepared rolls of wooden ties and Garth is laying these on trackage near the Baker Yard South Roundhouse being built by Merv.

Merv’s 10 stall Roundhouse nears completion at the back of Baker Yard South, quite a structure too!

Work on the layout in June: Teagon has poured a base for his Priddis station.

Work progresses on a new or extended Intermodal track, work being put in by Jordan, backed up by Ron.

Shawn Sproule is carrying on laying the final road and associated scenery on the traffic bridge South of Priddis.

Don is looking into bringing back to life our existing narrow gauge. One missing bridge has been found and loosely located into position.

Dennis, our newest member is presently starting to replace a main-line curved bridge between Chinook Yard and Priddis

THE FLOOD, 2013 AND CMT

As far as I can tell the club has come out from the flood without any problems. The portables were raised from floor level as the threat of some minor came in then, as rains and flood reports continued, written history of CMT, Member Of The Year Plaque all DCC locomotives, hand units and  other remaining locomotives which were already packed together were quickly removed from the club but no one thought damage would be as severe and as wide spread as it is. My truck and Garage are full of this stuff. A Structural Engineer has already visited the layout Monday, July 1 and gave a positive report. There still needs to be an air monitoring check conducted. We still are without electricity but high and dry!

Although he describes assembly of one of his kits, the hints provided are great for your records.   He writes: “I wrote this a year or two ago & IMO it really covers the hydrocal bases pretty well. I recommend sealing the castings before adding color, and in this tutorial I explain why in detail w/illustrations.                                                                                                           JOHN ALLEN MEMORIAL BREAKFAST

Many CMT members do not know the name John Allen. He died in 1971.  Having lived in Monterey, California. He was a bachelor and followed his hobby of Model railroading full  time. There are plenty of books and DVD’s. Here is a message from his friends after all these years they dot forget their and my friend although I neve met him he did so much for our hobby that we accept as  normal things to do in the hobby. The famous Miniatur Wunderland in Hamburg. This is from the 720p HD video Ernie shot last summer when we were in Europe. The world’s largest model railroad. NOVEMBER  16,  CMT 75th ANNIVERSARY:   This will be our Fall Open House.

CMT 75th ANNIVERSARY  CLUB CARS:    I’m happy to report  that a positive membership vote was taken to order 60 of each of the 2 cars below at the May business Meeting. The 3 bay hopper will have Red lettering on a Gray body and the 50 foot boxcar will be white lettering on a Blue body. Brookes displayed is O scale Boxcar from the Toronto Model O Scale Model Railroad Club to show just what a special run car looks like.  Al Matchett is clearing up any remaining details as he orders these cars for delivery in the fall in time for our November Open House. The first car of each type of car will be available for sale to club members at $10 each, more of each type will be sold to members at cost and the price that cars  will be sold to the general public as not been decided yet.  

OUTSIDE BUILDING REPORT: The bushes on the Southwest corner of the building have been cleared away and the back Security light has been replaced. The front large broken window needs attention and is being actively pursued.

LAYOUT REPORT:   “Priddis Plank” (my name for a temporary replacement section of mainline track) marks the spot where a Central Valley bridge was removed and this temporary link was installed allowing Brookes to complete painting his backdrop painting behind the mainline without slowing train operation or damaging the Central Valley Bridge which was initially installed. Brookes says work on the backdrop will be completed well ahead of our November Open House. Following completion of the artwork, the Central Valley bridge needs re-installation.  I need a member to step up to prepare the bridge for re-installation. Please see Dale for details.

PARKING:  Brookes asked for Stampede Parking volunteers. I think Brookes will coordinate names. Volunteers need to report 10:30 am  each day of Stampede except Wednesday (Family Day) where  9am is check-in time. Thursday is “Sneak-A-Peek” starting at 6 pm so an afternoon check-in time is needed. Those who volunteered so far were Brookes, Dale, Paul, Andrew.  Brookes will coordinate names and hopefully more folks can step forward for a day or so shift. 

ELECTIONS: Presidential Elections will be held at the June meeting. Please consider putting your name forward. We have an excellent supporting cast of your executive members (Secretary, Treasurer, Past President, Membership Coordinator) have past experience to guide you should any questions arise.

MEMBERSHIP CARDS/BROCHURES: Dale suggested CMT membership cars be available and Shawn Sproule will gather details from Times Press and report to Brookes on his findings.

After this announcement from Testors (above), I find that George Sellios, world renowned kit manufacturer (Fine Scale Minatures) says his favorite Floquil color is Earth in a spray can for priming castings and has found a replacement at Home Depot: It is Rustoleum-Camouflage (Khaki) spray can #1917 is a very close match to Floquil Earth in the spray can. George lives in Boston so this information is American based but considering the US based stores moving into Calgary, you may find this product on the shelf.

Ever try Modeling with Paper? Here is one approach that I want to leave with you:
 

I’d like to introduce you to a good friend and fantastic modeler, Jon Addison. Jon is the owner and builder of the Sn3 Silverton Central Modular RR and a long time team member of the Fn3 Sundance Central Modular RR. He’s also been a member of several local model RR groups. He’s going to show and tell you how he’s constructing structures made from paper for his new On30 layout, now heeeeere’s Jonny.

My O-scale paper structures were built using methods I learned from viewing the DVD from Danish artist and modeler, Troels Kirk. The material used to build these structures is called pastel paper. It can be purchased in notebook form and I prefer the black paper. First I dry brush the color on. In the case of the Palmer building, I used a combination of bright yellow, pale yellow and white. Use a flat-tip brush and dip a portion of the brush into all three colors at once. Dry brush the paint mixture in only one direction making sure to leave some of the black paper showing through. To get the weathering effects along the bottom of the building, dab on black and brown very lightly with a #6 filbert brush. To make the boards simply cut the painted sheet into strips of the desired width using a #11 Exacto blade and straight edge. For special effects, cut the edges in a slight wavy line to create the “second-cut” boards.

The subwalls were made from medium grade artist illustration board. It’s cut to shape along with the window and door openings. I prefer to use Tichy windows and doors because of their good quality. A machinist’s square is used to draw horizontal guide lines onto the subwalls. This will make for easier alignment of the boards.

I used Tite Bond 2 glue to adhere the "boards" to the subwalls. The boards were laid in a slightly over-lapping effect thus creating the clapboard siding. The nail holes were made with a pummel wheel running along a straight edge. I used scale-size strips of newspaper, painted flat black, for the tar paper roof.

The signage was applied while the walls were still flat and unassembled. These particular fish images were cut from a Florida Sportsman magazine and reduced to the appropriate size.

The building was assembled by placing 1/4-inch square wood strips into the corners and longitudinally. This makes for good structural strength. The inside of the building was then painted flat black.

The weathering on the building sides was done with a wash using odorless mineral spirits and artist oils. The roof was weathered almost the same way except for using dry paint pigments mixed in with the spirits.

Finally the entire structure was dry brushed with a white/flesh tone combination.

SUPERTRAIN 2013: set perhaps a record attendance in the area of 13,700. Total attendance numbers, or how much food and money the Food Bank took but the Girl Guides completely sold out of their cookies.

NOVEMBER  16,  CMT 75th ANNIVERSARY:    I am still seeking input as requested from seeking what you would like to see as part of our Anniversary.

CMT 75th ANNIVERSARY  CLUB CARS:  Some members want a 75th Anniversary Club Car and I’ve been in contact with Accurail (I actually talked to the President himself). Accurail can custom decorate cars, the minimum run size is 48 cars. “Following receipt of funds, projects can take place from 30-120 days”, and the Accurail says their run time demand is pretty good right now at meeting their deadlines. I will be asking for a decision at the May business meeting if CMT wants to order a run of Anniversary cars, a simple 40 foot Steel AAR car painted boxcar Red which Accurail has plenty in stock. I envision White lettering with car #2013 for all cars. I’ve asked Al Matchett to help me with lettering ideas from existing CMT Boxcars lettering on the club to the type seen on his Anniversary special Diesels.  Any other car chosen may delay our request. Our cost price will be about $16.00 in US funds plus shipping. Shipping is based on weight. Accurail could not suggest shipping cost now, but a firm quote sent back to us will include shipping. My feeling from the phone conversation is that the cost to CMT may be in the area of $18.50 in US funds delivered to Calgary.  Anything beyond this is your decision: if CMT wants to absorb any costs and give cars to members as part of our 75th then sell any remaining cars at a profit, or sell at cost to members and a make profit from non-members ……….that is your choice. Remember that excess stock can be sold at Open Houses, repainted, or just run on the club. My only concern is that we don’t want to be left with unsold cars.  Remember, I’ll be looking for your opinions if this is what is wanted since the order has to be placed soon.

NORM HAINES:  Member of The South Bank Model Railroad Club lost one of their long term members, Norm Haines. You may not have known Norm personally as I have had the priviledge, but he was the Auctioneer for most years at the annual October Model Railroad Auction. In the last 4-5 years he shared duties with other club members. My favorite memory is that he coined the phrase during the Auction of “let’s start bidding on all this neat stuff”

The creators are planning to work on models of Italy and France after the airport section.

Penticton Museum 2014 Centennial Request to Clubs

 The Penticton Museum is working towards an approximate 15 month long celebration in 2014-2015 of the centennial of the Kettle Valley Railway (KVR) and the S.S. Sicamous sternwheeler on Okanagan Lake. This project is in conjunction with a wider city initiative to promote tourism. The idea is to set up a special convention where model railway layouts would be displayed – much the same idea as the "Trains" show in Burnaby or the Lions Club Chilliwack show. Only, this would be a one-time special event. This won’t be limited to just model railroading, the broader railroad and steam boat scene will also be represented. (2)   Ever see a real diesel  engine get dropped: A brand new American Engineered EMD GT46C-ACe was dropped while being unloaded from the cargo-ship at dock. Not sure of the root cause yet but this one is going to be expensive to fix. The frame is certainly broken and every rotating apparatus can be deemed scrap. The annual Trains Show and Meet will go ahead again this year. A new committee has been formed to coordinate the event. At the moment, it is expected that there will be the full slate of usual activities, including public show, clinics, RPM, layout tours, banquet, etc.

CMRS OPN HOUSE TOUR: CMT participated in the just past CMRS Open House tour and estimated number of visitors is about 45-50 and we even saw a few cash donations.

FLAMES HOCKEY PARKING:  CMT members are always needed. See Brookes to add your name and receive dues reduction for work done.

CHANGE OF MEETING NIGHTS: Due to Hockey games being played on the odd Wednesday, note the changed to meeting dates:

March 6 is Hockey night so we meet Thursday, March 7,

March 13 is Hockey night so we meet Thursday, March 14,

March 27 is Hockey night so we meet March 28.

April has 3 game nights on Wednesday, TBA

MARCH  8-10:  The weekend-long  Model  Railroad Meet  entitled “THE CHINOOK”. Registration is $20 with details to be found in this newsletter.

 CMT FLEA MARKET: scheduled for Sunday, March 10 in the Glenmore Inn Hotel.  As of 21 Feb there are 29 of 36 available tables sold. Schedule below:  

7:30 am: CMT setup, members are requested to arrive in time for setup to start.

8-9 am:  Vendor setup starts on the tables provided by CMT.

9 am: Selling starts

SUPERTRAIN 2013: is approaching for the weekend of April 20-21. Members are wanted to both setup Friday April 19, during the weekend and teardown Sunday evening (April 21) after the show closes.   In advance of the show, module setup will start this Wednesday, February 27  at the club where operating  bugs will be cleared out over the next several weeks.  Don’t  forget  to obtain your Gala dinner  tickets for the Saturday evening dinner, this is always a fun – time. Check the SUPERTRAIN web site for details.

ELECTIONS: are upcoming at the March Business Meeting to fill the positions of President and 4 Directors

CMT 75th ANNIVERSARY: Yes, CMT was founded in 1938 and to mark 75 years as a club Al has already painted and lettered   a very nice U28B which was shown at the February Business Meeting. He has another one in the paint shop and will also paint and letter 2-GP38 units lettered 1938 and 2013 for the 75 years. For this Anniversary the executive wants your input.

DONATION: CMT made a $100 donation toward inspection of 6060 a 4-8-2 Mountain steam loco from CB. If you choose to donate there is a tax deductable form available. Please make payable to Rocky Mountain Rail Society. Brookes can provide more details.

DAY-TRIP TO EDMONTON:  Plans are being formed up for a suggested field to operate and view the layout in Fort Edmonton Park.  Departure would be 7 am in a van, do some hobby shopping along the way, run on the layout for 3 hours, dinner and back to Calgary. Suggested dates  MAY  be March 16 or April 6. When confirmed members will be notified.

 Calgary is proud to host The Chinook, the 6th Division Spring Meet, March 8 – 10, 2013. The name of the meet honours the high speed passenger train that Canadian Pacific Railway introduced in 1936 to connect Calgary and Edmonton. The weekend will be filled with plenty of activities, many of them centred around the theme of passenger trains, operations, and facilities. This meet also links together four different model railroad events taking place in Calgary, and registering for The Chinook gives you access to all of them. Maybe the best part of all is that the cost of registration is only $20 for NMRA members and $30 for non-members.

To keep costs low, we will be using three different venues and all meals are no host. The daytime activities on Friday and Saturday will be held at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, 703 Heritage Drive SW. The AGM, Dinner, Socializing and Slide Night will take place at the Royal Canadian Legion, 9202 Horton Road SW, just a few blocks from the church and close to Calgary Transit’s Heritage Station. The Legion offers a great selection of food and beverages at very competitive prices. On Sunday, all events take place at the Glenmore Inn, 2720 Glenmore Trail SE. Layout tours will be drive yourself, with the committee providing accurate maps and addresses to plug into your GPS.

If you are coming from out of town and need a place to stay for the weekend, the Glenmore Inn is about a 10 minute drive from the church and legion. There are also several hotels and motels along Macleod Trail within a five minute drive from the church, including the Econo Lodge, two Travelodge, and the Carriage House.

We will not be doing pre-paid registrations, but would certainly appreciate advance notice of your attendance so we can properly plan our space requirements.
